Ukraine's Defense Ministry reveals August air defense results

Ukrainian air defense forces shot down over 4,600 missiles and drones during the massive attacks in August 2026. The Ukrainian military also shot down over 50,000 Russian tactical-level drones, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
What Ukrainian air defense shot down in August
The effective performance of the air defense was ensured by aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
Over the course of the month, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down the following aerial targets:
- 3,326 Shahed-type attack drones
- 1,031 reconnaissance drones
- 820 Lancet drones
- 101 S8000 Banderol drones
- 25 Kh-101 cruise missiles
- 21 Kh-59/69 missiles
- 8 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles
- 8 Kalibr missiles
- 5 Onyx missiles
- 4 Iskander-K missiles.
New challenge
Russian jet-powered drones have become a serious threat to Ukraine's air defense. During certain massive attacks, they accounted for nearly half of all Russian long-range drones.
Effectively destroying such high-speed targets requires additional weaponry, specifically aircraft equipped with air-to-air missiles, aircraft cannons, and ground-based anti-aircraft systems.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is currently working to strengthen air defense capabilities accordingly.
Previous Russian attacks on Ukraine
The Russians continue to launch combined strikes on Ukrainian territory daily, wearing down air defense systems.
In particular, during a nighttime attack on September 5, Russian forces launched Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and more than 160 drones of various types. Ukrainian air defense forces managed to neutralize a significant portion of the Russian targets.
Meanwhile, the US is exploring ways to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.
