Ukraine's air defense boosts by 2x, but gaps remain: Expert estimates 60-70% coverage
The Ukrainian Air Defense Forces have strengthened Ukraine's defense against air threats more than twice compared to the previous year, as former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ihor Romanenko, said in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
Romanenko noted that it would be inappropriate to provide specific figures when assessing how well the Ukrainian sky is currently protected compared to the pre-full-scale war period.
This is mainly connected to the fact that the threats were different before February 24, 2022. Currently, Russian military forces are using drones, cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as guided aerial bombs.
"Roughly speaking, the defense level was around 30% before, it is now at 60-70%, but this applies to specific objects. But there are still many facilities in Ukraine that are basically unprotected by air defense systems," added the expert.
Anticipating potential missile and drone attacks by Russia, Ukraine is forming new air defense groups, specifically in the northern regions of Ukraine, aiming to boost the country's defense capabilities.
Recently, Ukrainian border guards demonstrated how mobile air defense groups are effectively countering Russian drones.
