Ukraine plans to lift ban on drone export
Ukraine may lift its ban on drone exports in a bid to boost production and attract investment. Officials and industry leaders emphasize the importance of this move to strengthen the country’s military capabilities in its fight against Russian aggression, citing the Financial Times.
The Ukrainian military faces a critical shortage of drones for reconnaissance, coverage, and attacks. With limited state resources, drone manufacturers are seeking access to international markets to fund production for the Ukrainian army.
According to Oleksandr Marikovskyi, head of the parliamentary economic subcommittee, drone exports could generate up to $20 billion, significantly aiding the development of the sector.
Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine has prohibited the export of military goods to ensure the army is supplied with necessary weaponry. However, companies like Ukrspecsystems are now experiencing a shortage of orders. Dmytro Khasapov, the head of the company, said that state procurement does not cover their production capacity, and the government lacks sufficient budget to fund all military needs.
Drone manufacturers hope that lifting the export ban will not only attract investments but also support research and development in this crucial field.
Experts warn that without the resumption of exports, prices for Ukrainian drones could rise, and some companies have already started producing their goods abroad to bypass current restrictions.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that the best way to increase military aid to the Defense Forces is by purchasing weapons from Ukrainian manufacturers. He added that this option would be the best investment in security for the West.
