Ukraine needs security guarantees until it is invited to join NATO. But this requires a timeline for when Ukraine will join the Alliance, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says.

“If there is a pause while Ukraine is not in NATO, and even if we had an invitation and we were not in NATO, and there is a pause, who guarantees us any security? We can think and work on Emmanuel's position,” Zelenskyy writes.

The President recalls that French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that some part of the troops of a country should be present on the territory of Ukraine. This would supposedly guarantee security while Ukraine is not in NATO.

“But we must have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will be in the EU and when Ukraine will be in NATO. Understanding our future, these would be very effective guarantees,” Zelenskyy emphasizes.

Macron's initiative

French leader Emmanuel Macron announced the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine. However, this sparked a discussion among Ukraine's allies.

It is not about sending troops directly to participate in hostilities. Some NATO countries said they were ready to consider such a possibility. Among them are Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Canada.

However, most countries did not support Macron's position. At the same time, Macron's unexpected statement caused even more tension between him and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
