In the morning of January 4, an Su-34 fighter-bomber caught fire at the Shagol airfield in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. The successful operation is attributed to the Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, according to sources in the special services.

"On the night of January 4, a Su-34 fighter-bomber caught fire at the Shagol airfield in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. This operation is the work of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine," a source told RBC-Ukraine.

Shagol airfield and Russia's war against Ukraine

Shagol is a military airfield near the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. The airfield is home to the 108th Training Aviation Regiment of the Chelyabinsk Aviation School and the 2nd Mixed Aviation Regiment of the 21st Mixed Aviation Division of the Central Military District of the Russian Federation.

On March 5, 2022, in Ukraine, a Russian Su-34 aircraft was shot down while bombing residential quarters in the city of Chernihiv. The crew managed to eject. The navigator of the enemy aircraft was killed, and the pilot, Major Aleksandr Krasnoyartsev, was captured and later exchanged.

The Su-34 (NATO codename: Fullback) is a Soviet and Russian multi-role fighter-bomber.

Designed for precise missile and bomb strikes on enemy ground targets in both operational and tactical depths, as well as for engaging enemy air targets. It can reach speeds of up to 1,900 km/h at altitudes of up to 14.6 km.

Su-34 can strike targets at a distance of 150-600 km from the front line.

The Russian military continues to suffer losses, including in aviation. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the enemy has lost 329 aircraft and 324 helicopters.
