Ukraine is discussing the possibility of transit for Azerbaijani gas to the European Union, aiming to maintain its role as a transit country. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this in an interview with Bloomberg.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine is negotiating gas supplies from Azerbaijan to the European Union to maintain its role as a transit country. Additionally, Ukraine aims to assist its Western neighbors in ensuring energy security.

The President explained that a deal to replace Russian gas with Azerbaijani supplies is one of the proposals currently under discussion.

"It’s the cabinet officials who are dealing with this now. Alternative steps are being considered now on how we can use the pipeline with another gas supplier, another country. Negotiations are underway. We don’t want to extend the gas contract with the Russian Federation. We don’t want them making money here," Zelenskyy said.

Supply of Russian gas to the European Union

The supply of Russian gas to the European Union has always been a crucial element of Europe's energy security. Russia has been one of the largest suppliers of natural gas to EU countries, meeting a significant portion of their energy resource needs.

Azerbaijani gas plays an important role in enhancing the energy security of the European Union by helping to reduce dependence on Russian gas and promoting stability and reliability in the energy supply to the region.

Azerbaijan is also actively expanding its infrastructure to increase gas supply volumes to Europe in the future.

It's worth noting that on June 24th, the European Union approved its 14th package of sanctions against Russia, which included restrictions on the purchase or import of Russian LNG through terminals not connected to the EU gas network.
