Ukraine could become the foundation of a united European force, but only after a war with Russia. There is no time for this now, as the main focus remains on the frontline, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a press conference.
"We have the largest army with war experience. The Ukrainian army could become the foundation for united European forces. This requires several steps for which we currently have no time," Zelenskyy said.
According to him, there are legal and bureaucratic steps to take, as well as a need to attract financing sources.
"We have no time for this because we are focused on the frontline. As soon as the war ends, we will certainly join this structure. What Europe could do now is prepare an entire financial framework," the president added.
The idea of a united European force
European countries are planning to create a new military alliance as an alternative to NATO, which could also include Ukraine.
Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the idea of creating European Armed Forces belongs to Ukraine and was proposed to partners as a means of strengthening the continent's security. It would involve an army of at least 3 million soldiers.
According to him, the formation of European Armed Forces is not a competition with the United States or the Alliance, but a response to Europe's need for a strong army.
Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine could become a key element of such an army if European leaders support the idea. According to him, it is not only about the number of troops — at least 3 million — but also about systematic exchange of technologies.
