Ukraine is initiating an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with a Russian attack using an Oreshnik ballistic missile on the Lviv region. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that the world must respond to another act of terror, Sybiha said.

Convening the UN Security Council

According to Sybiha, the use of ballistic missiles against civilian regions is a gross violation of international law. Ukraine has already begun convening the UN Security Council to hold Russia accountable for the escalation.

"Russia claims it used an intermediate-range ballistic missile, the so-called Oreshnik, against the Lviv region. We will be initiating international action — an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council, as well as responses within the EU, Council of Europe, and OSCE," the minister said.

Geography of the attacks and Kremlin justifications

Overnight, Lviv and Kyiv came under attack. Earlier this week, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih were hit by massive attacks. Sybiha emphasized that Russia has definitively chosen the path of brutality over diplomacy, disregarding all peace efforts.

At the same time, the Kremlin officially confirmed the launch of a ballistic missile at Lviv. Russian propaganda is attempting to justify another act of terror with a fake claim of an alleged attack on Putin's residence. Minister Sybiha criticized this position, calling on partners to respond to the real killing of Ukrainians rather than to the aggressor's fabricated pretexts.

What Ukraine expects

The foreign minister called on the international community to take concrete steps:

  • Strengthening air defense: providing additional systems to intercept ballistic targets.

  • New sanctions: harsh restrictions against Russia's military-industrial complex.

  • Diplomatic isolation: public condemnation of the use of experimental weapons against civilians.

The enemy carried out a combined attack on peaceful Ukrainian cities. The geography of Russian attacks included Lviv, Kyiv, and several other regions, including Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih.

Russia officially confirmed a nighttime ballistic missile strike on Lviv on January 9. Russians attempted to justify this latest act of terror with fake statements about an alleged attack on Putin's residence.
