Ukraine has managed to bring home seven civilian citizens who had been illegally held in Russian captivity for years, according to Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets.

The released Ukrainians are aged between 35 and 66. They were illegally detained in 2022 during the occupation of Mariupol, the Kyiv region (Bucha district), as well as the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions.

One of the Ukrainians was abducted from his home solely because his sons serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Another was taken on his way to work on the day of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Among those released is also a volunteer who joined the Angels of Tyra unit in Mariupol in 2022. On the same day, Tyra was also detained alongside him, and she was returned home earlier.

Last prisoner exchange

As a reminder, on June 26, Ukraine and Russia carried out the third stage of a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange. As part of the exchange, 160 Ukrainians were returned from Russia.

Among those released are servicemembers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Special Transport Service, members of the National Guard, and border guards.

These are fighters who defended Mariupol, Azovstal, and the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy directions.

The released servicemembers had been held in captivity since 2022.

Among those freed are 115 defenders of Mariupol. In addition to soldiers and sergeants, 58 officers were also brought home. The youngest released defender is 26 years old, while the oldest is 66.
