The Ukrainian Mariupol Design Bureau has launched serial production of the Mara fixed-wing drone, which operates alongside the Balun balloon-based logistics system. The system can deliver a strike weapon up to 1,000 km at an altitude of more than 10 km, with a price tag of up to $6,000, according to a press release from the Ukrainian Mariupol Design Bureau.

How Mara works with Balun

The strike weapon is attached to a special release mechanism beneath the Balun balloon. According to the designers, the system is the first mass-produced system capable of delivering a strike weapon over long distances without being suppressed by enemy electronic warfare or electronic reconnaissance systems and without interference from air defenses.

The balloon is equipped with a ballast system, navigation system, data transmission system, and release mechanism. Once it reaches the target area, Mara is released from the balloon and switches to manual control by a pilot.

In this mode, the drone can fly another 60 km and strike a target, as well as cover additional distance in gliding mode. The designers also developed the drone's communication and control system themselves, but details have not yet been disclosed.

Price and production plans

The system is estimated to cost up to $6,000. The design bureau describes Mara and Balun as the cheapest known systems for medium- and long-range strikes.

According to the developers, the system has already undergone combat testing, with successful strikes recorded in temporarily occupied Crimea and Berdiansk.

The designers have repeatedly tested the system in combat conditions and have confirmation of both successful strikes and enemy attempts to counter the balloons.

Flight altitude is considered the system's main advantage. Because of this, the enemy cannot use inexpensive weapons such as interceptor drones or anti-aircraft guns. Destroying Balun would require expensive air defense missiles.

"Thus, our system can not only effectively strike targets at medium and long ranges but also serve as a highly effective means of saturating enemy airspace and depleting their air defense systems," the designers said.

The bureau is currently focused on two key products: the reusable Everest jet-powered interceptor drone and Mara. The company is preparing serial production of Mara for mid-October, and expects to launch mass production of the interceptor in November.

Long-range drones capable of overcoming Russian air defenses remain a key priority for Ukraine's defense industry. Ukraine is also developing a new long-range Bravo drone capable of striking targets up to 2,000 km away.
