Ukraine is preparing for a new phase of increasing natural gas imports from Poland. The relevant joint project has already been approved by the regulators of both countries, according to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Gas Transmission System Operator (GTSO) has received approval from the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NEURC) to expand capacity on the interconnection with Poland. The Polish regulator (URE) has also granted simultaneous approval for the implementation of this decision.
A joint auction for the increased capacity will take place on July 6, 2026, on the GSA (Gas System Auctions Platform). It provides for the allocation of two tiers:
- 6.98 million cubic meters per day (in gas years from 2030/2031 to 2044/2045)
- 10.20 million cubic meters per day (in gas years from 2032/2033 to 2046/2047).
Further steps will depend on the auction results and the outcome of the economic test. If market demand is confirmed, the Ukrainian GTSO and the Polish operator GAZ-SYSTEM will move to the practical phase, the development of the relevant infrastructure.
Increasing capacity in this direction will expand access to the European gas market. This will also reduce dependence on risky supply routes and enhance the reliability of the energy system in wartime conditions.
On the night of May 5, Russians struck a gas production facility in the Poltava region, causing a massive fire. Russia carried out a second missile strike after the State Emergency Service of Ukraine rescuers arrived at the scene.
As a result of the Russian strikes, two rescue workers and three Naftogaz employees were killed, and dozens of people were injured. The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that such strikes against emergency services are a deliberate tactic by the Russians and are considered a war crime.
