The UK is advising residents to stock up on three days' worth of food, water, and medication. The government says the recommendations are intended to help people prepare for emergencies and cyberattacks.
UK residents urged to prepare
The government published updated household guidance on October 23. The government website says people should take a few simple steps to stay prepared for temporary disruptions to everyday services.
The advice is the first stage of a three-year Be Ready campaign, aimed at helping households across the UK feel better prepared for emergencies.
What to do
The campaign focuses on simple steps people can take in advance to prepare for emergencies, such as a three-day event.
"With storms last winter and the wildfires this summer showing how severe weather events can cause disruption to our everyday lives and impact the services we rely on," the statement says.
The Be Ready checklist:
-
Three liters of bottled water per person per day for drinking. You will need more water for cooking and washing.
-
Long-life food that does not require refrigeration or cooking, such as canned meat, fish, or vegetables, dried fruit, and nuts.
-
Hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and bathroom essentials.
-
A flashlight (and spare batteries).
-
Blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing. Homes can get cold very quickly when the heating goes off.
-
A battery-powered FM radio (or one with a charging option).
-
A fully charged power bank for charging phones or compatible medical devices.
-
Cash (coins and banknotes) and payment cards in case electronic payments or ATMs experience disruptions.
-
Copies of identification and other documents.
-
Important phone numbers and information.
-
A first-aid kit and supplies: waterproof bandages, gauze, a thermometer, antiseptic, eye-wash solution, sterile dressings and gloves, medical tape, and tweezers.
-
Infant formula, diapers, and wet wipes.
