Britain has called on EU leaders to refrain from commenting on the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, reports The Telegraph.

According to The Telegraph's sources, such comments, in particular from French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, could have the opposite effect and force Trump to exclude Europe from the negotiation process.

Trump and Putin are scheduled to meet on Friday in Anchorage, Alaska. The leaders will not be accompanied by advisors, and the talks will be face-to-face.

The UK emphasizes that the most effective way to influence the US president is through private consultations, not public demands.

The Prime Minister's spokesman emphasized that Britain refrains from giving any public instructions to Trump.

British sources note that “unhelpful running commentary” from European leaders only irritates the Americans and risks weakening the US negotiating position.

According to the officials, public pressure could distract Trump from taking into account the European position and make it more difficult to reach a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.

The UK calls for restraint and diplomatic influence behind the scenes to keep the talks constructive and free from external pressure.

Trump-Putin talks on peace in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump announced a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. Before that, the American leader did not rule out the exchange of territories between Ukraine and Russia.

The WSJ wrote that at the meeting, Putin could give Trump an ultimatum to recognize the occupied territories of Ukraine as Russian in exchange for the withdrawal of the troops from other districts and regions.

EU leaders and Ukraine put forward their own proposal for a peaceful settlement for the US and Russian leaders to negotiate.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Putin's proposal was an attempt to repeat the Crimean scenario. He emphasized that Kyiv would not allow this to happen.
