UK unveils first sample of Challenger 3 tank
The UK Army has presented a new Challenger 3 main battle tank. Two such vehicles have been produced so far, according to the Army Recognition.
The tank was presented at the Defense Vehicle Dynamics (DVD) 2024 exhibition in Millbrook. This version of the Challenger is considered one of the most advanced in its class. It is also interesting that this is the first public display of the Challenger 3, and it is already called the deadliest tank.
The Challenger 3 is manufactured at the RBSL plant in Telford, UK. It is designed using advanced technologies in close cooperation with the British military, which ensures high combat effectiveness, protection, and comfort for the crew.
According to the manufacturers, a total of 148 Challenger 3 tanks will be modernized, two of which have already been produced. Six more are planned to be delivered soon. Currently, the military is conducting tests to verify the characteristics.
Challenger 3
The Challenger 3 tank has a significant number of technical improvements compared to its predecessor, the Challenger 2. The main upgrade is the replacement of the weapon: The Challenger 3 has a 120-mm L55A1 smoothbore gun. It is superior in firepower to the previous L30A1 rifled gun and is also more compatible with NATO ammunition. The new gun allows for the use of modern projectiles with kinetic energy and programmable ammunition. All this together significantly increases the tank's lethality.
The tank's defense has also changed: Challenger 2 had Chobham armor, but its successor is equipped with a new generation of modular armor developed by the Defense Research and Technology Laboratory. This armor has modern materials and modular components. They, in turn, allow for faster repairs and provide increased protection.
Challenger 3 has a fully digital architecture and network system. This allows for real-time data exchange and integration with other combat vehicles. The tank has advanced surveillance systems, 360-degree visibility, and a thermal imager. This makes it more effective in detecting, identifying, and engaging targets.
The developers have installed a more powerful engine and modernized suspension on the Challenger 3. This provides it with better mobility and acceleration, which is critical for the dynamics of the modern battlefield.
More details
Earlier, the new Challenger 3 was presented and demonstrated in the UK. It is the first fully British tank in 22 years.
The UK Ministry of Defense reports that the Challenger 3 is designed to NATO standards and is equipped with advanced sensors, advanced armor, and an active defense system. It is planned to put 140 of these tanks into service starting in 2024. The vehicle can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h and uses 120-mm ammunition.
Later, the UK Ministry of Defense showed a video of the new tank being tested.
The United Kingdom has already handed over 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, which are being successfully used at the front.
