UK Prime Minister hints at deploying British troops for training Ukrainian forces
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hinted that British troops might be deployed to western Ukraine to train soldiers, reports The Times.
During talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Starmer agreed that enhancing training initiatives is critical.
"Sir Keir Starmer has hinted that British troops could be deployed to western Ukraine to train soldiers," the media says.
Starmer reiterated that around 51,000 Ukrainian soldiers have undergone training in the UK as part of Operation Interflex. But the soldiers need to cover long distances to get to the UK, which may discourage Ukrainians from enrolling in the program.
Military training in Ukraine
Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to form a coalition of countries willing to train Ukrainian soldiers within Ukraine rather than abroad, as is currently the case.
The proposal was extended to Baltic nations, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, the Netherlands, and the United States. However, many within NATO oppose the idea, fearing it could draw member states into direct conflict with Russia.
Later, media reports suggested that the Netherlands might join Macron's proposed coalition.
