On Tuesday, May 20, the United Kingdom imposed new large-scale sanctions against Russia, aimed at increasing pressure on Russia's military, energy, and financial sectors, according to the official website of the UK government.

The new sanctions list includes 100 designations, targeting Russian military entities, organizations supporting the Kremlin's aggressive information warfare, as well as financial institutions involved in funding the invasion of Ukraine.

"As President Putin ruthlessly intensifies his strikes against innocent Ukrainians, the UK is ramping up pressure with a raft of 100 new sanctions," the statement says.

Special attention is being given by the government to enforcing the oil price cap, which helps reduce Russia’s key revenues needed to sustain Putin’s war machine.

"Today’s measures sanction the supply chains of deadly Russian weapons systems, including Iskander missiles," the government website says.

Together with its partners, the United Kingdom is working to strengthen mechanisms for controlling energy prices.

Restricting the Russian economy

The sanctions also target 14 members of the Social Design Agency (SDA) - an organization conducting Kremlin-funded information operations aimed at undermining democracy and the rule of law in Ukraine and around the world.

Previously, restrictions had already been imposed on the SDA's leadership, and now the sanctions extend to all levels of the organization.

"We urge him to agree a full, unconditional ceasefire right away so there can be talks on a just and lasting peace," David Lammy said.

The new sanctions also target 46 financial institutions that assist Russia in circumventing restrictions, including the St. Petersburg Currency Exchange and the Russian Deposit Insurance Agency.

These measures are aimed at isolating the Russian economy and disrupting the Kremlin’s funding channels.

EU sanctions against Russia

On May 20, the EU introduced the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. The package includes measures against hybrid threats and human rights violations.

The EU High Representative emphasized that the longer Russia wages this war, the tougher the response will be.
