The United Kingdom and the European Union are considering holding their first bilateral summit to “reset” relations after Brexit, the Financial Times reports.

EU and UK officials have confirmed that the meeting will be similar to those that the political bloc has already held with third countries such as India and China.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, for his part, plans to continue efforts to restore his country to the world stage when he meets with nearly 50 European leaders at Blenheim Palace this Thursday.

Both sides said that plans for the summit are at an early stage, but since taking over as Prime Minister, Starmer has made it clear that he plans to re-engage with Brussels institutions.

After his recent election victory, the newly minted Prime Minister also had a phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. At the time, the UK called the relationship between the country and the EU “unique.”

Also on Monday, July 15, the head of the Ministry of European Relations, Nick Thomas-Symonds, held talks with the Vice President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič.

The UK government stated that there had been many fruitful discussions, but this was just the beginning

Brexit

Brexit is the process of the UK's withdrawal from the EU, which began after a referendum on June 23, 2016, where 51.9% of voters voted to leave. The main reasons included a desire to regain sovereignty, control over immigration, and dissatisfaction with EU policies. The UK officially left the EU on January 31, 2020.
