The United Arab Emirates is preparing to help the US reopen the Strait of Hormuz by force. This could mark the first time a Gulf nation has become a party to hostilities in response to attacks by Iran, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The agency cites unnamed Arab officials who state that the UAE is lobbying for a UN Security Council resolution that would authorize such actions.

Emirati diplomats call on the US and military forces in Europe and Asia to form a coalition to reopen the strait by force, officials say.

A UAE representative states that the Iranian regime believes it is fighting for its survival and is prepared to strangle the global economy through a blockade of the Strait.

He also notes that the country is actively exploring options for its military participation in ensuring the strait’s security, including mine-clearing efforts and the provision of other support services.

At the same time, even if the vote fails, the Emirates are ready to join the military effort, sources say.

The UAE Foreign Ministry states that there is a broad global consensus that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be preserved.

According to some Arab officials, the UAE is urging the US to occupy islands in this strategic waterway. Specifically, Abu Musa Island, which Iran has held for half a century, and to which the UAE lays claim.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states are currently opposed to the Iranian regime and want the war to continue until it is neutralized or overthrown.

Before the war began, the UAE viewed Iran as a difficult neighbor whose political positions nevertheless followed a certain logic. But since February 28, the regime has shown its true colors.

At the same time, the UAE’s participation in a potential operation carries significant risks, as it could lead to prolonged tensions with Iran.

Against this backdrop, Tehran has already responded by stepping up attacks on UAE territory.

In recent days, the intensity of missile and drone strikes has risen sharply. In particular, approximately 50 ballistic and cruise missiles and drones have been launched.

Iran has also warned that it would destroy the critical infrastructure of any Gulf country that supports a military operation, specifically mentioning the UAE.

Strait of Hormuz situation

Following the US and Israeli military operation against Iran, Tehran blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy artery of the world.

About 20% of the world’s oil consumption and a significant portion of liquefied natural gas are transported through this narrow passage.

Earlier, the WSJ reported that US President Donald Trump told his aides he was ready to end the war against Iran. He is willing to do so even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed.

Yesterday, however, Trump stated that countries affected by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz should go and get their own oil.
