U.S. Treasury to coordinate tougher Russian sanctions with Europe and Japan, Reuters reports
Deputy Minister of Finance of the United States, Wally Adeyemo, will travel to Europe and Japan this month, where he will coordinate with partners on the use of a new tool for sanctions against Russia, reports Reuters.
It is noted that Adeyemo will visit Rome, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Tokyo from January 16 to 23, where he will meet with partners from the G7 and key representatives of the private sector, including financial institutions, researchers, and other industry leaders.
This is related to a recent decree by U.S. President Joe Biden, which allows Washington to impose new sanctions on financial institutions that assist Russia in evading sanctions.
Adeyemo's trip to Europe and Japan is dedicated to the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Reuters reports that during his stay in Japan, Adeyemo will discuss energy security and restrictions on the prices of Russian oil.
Russia is trying to circumvent Western sanctions
Media reports indicated that companies in Finland were sending goods to Russia used in military equipment. The customers of these companies have ties to Russian services and the defense sector.
Recently, the United States imposed new sanctions against Russia. The assets of the Russian Ministry of Defense fell under the restrictions.
At the end of December, U.S. President Joe Biden signed an executive order to strengthen sanctions against financial institutions aiding Russia.
