Greenland must eliminate the threat posed by the Russian Federation — a danger that NATO has been warning Copenhagen about for nearly 20 years, US President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social.
ЭNATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that “you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.” Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!" Trump wrote.
The US president emphasized that the time has now come to change this situation and that the Russian threat will be eliminated.
What led up to this
It was previously reported that Trump supports transferring Greenland under US control in order to deploy elements of the Golden Dome missile defense system there. He has warned that without a swift response from NATO, the strategically important island could fall under Russian or Chinese influence.
According to the US position, Washington is forced to take the lead because European allies are not demonstrating sufficient readiness to defend critical regions.
It is noted that the idea of purchasing or establishing control over Greenland is not new and has been discussed by US administrations for more than a century. The island is viewed as a key element of US national security.
At the same time, in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, there has been a noticeable surge in demand for survival goods and long-term food supplies. Local residents, reacting to statements from the United States, have expressed concern about possible external threats to the island.
Additionally, on January 18, the US Treasury Department stated that Washington’s interest in Greenland is driven by strategic considerations and the weakening role of Europe in matters of collective security.
