Trump to push for Ukraine-Russia deal, regardless of terms - expert
Donald Trump plans to advance a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia if he returns to the White House. This could happen regardless of the terms on which such an agreement is based, according to the RBC-Ukraine article "Autumn of presidents. Challenges for Ukraine and Zelenskyy amid US election."
It remains unclear what exactly Trump’s plan for Ukraine entails. According to American media, Trump's plan might involve pressuring both Ukraine and Russia. If Ukraine refuses to negotiate, US military aid could be reduced, while if Russia refuses, Ukraine would receive more weapons.
Uriel Epstein, executive director of the US-based nonprofit Renew Democracy Initiative, told RBC-Ukraine that Trump would prioritize pushing for an agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
“As for Trump, who knows what exactly is in his plan? What we do know is that Trump has been very willing to meet Russia halfway in the past, and his priority will be to push through a deal that he can put his name on, regardless of the terms. This does not bode well for Ukraine,” Uriel Epstein says.
During recent debates, Trump avoided answering whether Ukraine could win the war, simply stating that he wants to end the conflict. Trump also mentioned that he would call the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, claiming that the war would end after those conversations.
In recent days, Trump has also introduced new ideas related to this topic. He stated that he planned to reduce global oil prices to $40 per barrel by the end of the year, thereby decreasing Russia’s budget revenues.
However, the feasibility of these plans is in question, as such a move would harm US allies in the Middle East. In practice, Trump would likely need to make adjustments.
Trump's stance on Ukraine
Donald Trump, a US presidential candidate, has advocated for reducing aid to Ukraine. He suggested that assistance should be provided as a loan rather than a "gift."
Moreover, he has repeatedly claimed that he could end the war in Ukraine even before returning to the White House, or within 24 hours. During debates with his opponent, Democratic Party member Kamala Harris, he dodged a question about Ukraine’s victory.
