Despite the assassination attempt, US presidential candidate Donald Trump intends to join the Republican convention on Monday, July 15, reports the Associated Press.
As reported, the National Committee of the Republican Party has stated that the convention in Milwaukee will proceed despite the shooting incident at the rally.
"President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the US," the statement reads.
What happened
In Pennsylvania on July 13, during a rally, a presidential candidate Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt.
After gunshots rang out, he touched his ear and then sat down, with visible blood on his face. The US Secret Service swiftly evacuated Trump from the scene and he underwent medical evaluation at a healthcare facility.
Hours later, on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump disclosed that he sustained a gunshot wound to the upper part of his right ear and lost significant blood. However, according to his representatives, he is fine and his life is not in danger.
According to reports from several American media outlets, the gunman who fired at Trump was not at the rally but presumably on a rooftop outside the event venue. Reportedly, the Secret Service fatally shot the assailant. It's also known that one attendee at the rally was killed, likely from the shooter's gunfire, and another person was severely injured.
President Joe Biden stated that such violence has no place in America and called on the entire country to condemn this act. However, he noted that he cannot yet definitively classify the shooting at Trump's rally as an assassination attempt.
The current US President expressed relief that Trump is doing well and expressed hope to speak with him later in the evening.
