During his speech, Trump also said he considers it possible to make various decisions regarding Cuba.
"I can free it or take it, I think I can do anything I want with it," Trump said.
Context of the statement
The US president’s remarks came amid a worsening political and economic crisis in Cuba, as well as tense relations between Washington and Havana.
So far, there has been no official response from Cuban authorities to Donald Trump’s statement.
Trump also claimed that, in his view, Cuba faces two possible scenarios: either agree to a so-called friendly takeover or face what he called an unfriendly option, adding that ultimately, it doesn’t matter.
He noted that Washington could soon either reach an agreement with Cuba or make other decisions regarding the island. According to him, the situation in relations between the two countries could develop quite rapidly.
