US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the United States from the UN Human Rights Council, Reuters reports.
According to the media outlet, Trump signed a document to cease US participation in the UN Human Rights Council and to continue suspending funding for the Palestinian UN relief agency UNRWA.
Additionally, during a conversation with journalists, Trump stated that he was willing to meet with his Iranian counterpart to try to convince Iran to abandon what the US believes are attempts by Tehran to develop nuclear weapons.
US has suspended funding for foreign aid grants
The United States remains the world's largest donor of financial assistance, providing $72 billion in 2023. However, on January 21, President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of all foreign aid programs to assess their alignment with his foreign policy.
On January 24, the State Department issued an order to halt all foreign aid and suspend new payments, causing confusion among lawmakers and humanitarian organizations.
Mine clearance programs have also been frozen, and the USAID office in Ukraine temporarily suspended funding for projects. This decision is stricter than Trump's policy from 2017 to 2021, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio was granted the authority to make exceptions and has already approved emergency food aid.
