US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in Ukrainian combat drones for the American military. At the same time, Ukraine needs air defense systems, highlighting that both sides have mutual interests when it comes to weaponry, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says in an interview with the American television channel Newsmax.

In particular, Zelenskyy spoke about his phone conversation with Trump and confirmed that they discussed the creation of an air shield over Ukraine.

"Yesterday, we spoke with President Trump, and we said to him, 'I'm asking you very much, let's discuss a strategic air shield for Ukraine.' This is not only about the Patriot system - there are many other things. We produce a lot ourselves. We do a lot to protect our skies and our people," Zelenskyy said.

In addition, the Ukrainian President said Trump unexpectedly expressed interest in Ukrainian drones. The American leader stated that the US would be open to purchasing drones made in Ukraine.

"I told him that I really want to buy things from you - things that only you have. And he told me that America wants to buy drones produced in Ukraine. I think it's a win-win. I really want America to help us protect our skies. It's very important," Zelenskyy noted.

US ready to provide weapons to Ukraine with European funding

On July 14, the US and NATO signed an agreement under which American weapons will be supplied to Ukraine, with European countries paying for it. Ukraine will receive additional Patriot air defense systems.

During a press briefing on July 16, Trump confirmed that the first Patriot missiles are already being shipped to allies and will soon reach Ukraine. Kyiv is expected to receive $10 billion worth of American weapons. The package will include at least three Patriot batteries.
