President of the US Donald Trump revealed details of the attack during the White House correspondents' dinner. An armed man rushed a checkpoint — he was neutralized by Secret Service agents, according to the Clash Report.

How it happened

According to Trump, the hall was well protected. An armed man with several weapons rushed a checkpoint from about 45 meters away — far from the hall itself.

Secret Service agents neutralized the attacker. One of the guards sustained a gunshot wound at close range, but the bulletproof vest protected him; the officer is feeling well.

Trump published a close-up photo of the attacker, as well as surveillance video footage from the scene.

President's words

Trump called the incident unexpected and admitted he wanted to stay at the event — he said he fought as hard as he could, but protocol forced him to leave the building.

The president also revealed that he had prepared a speech which he himself described as the most inappropriate ever delivered, and promised to give it next time.

When a journalist asked why this keeps happening to him again and again, Trump replied:

"I have studied assassinations... they always go for the most impactful people, like Abraham Lincoln. They don’t go after the ones who don’t do much. We have done a lot," he said.

The attacker has been detained. According to Trump, investigators have already gone to his apartment — he allegedly lives in California.

In February 2026, a U.S. court sentenced Ryan Routh to life in prison for attempting to shoot the president on a Florida golf course in September 2024.

According to the investigation, he had planned the assassination for several weeks: he aimed a rifle through the bushes, but a Secret Service agent spotted him in time and opened fire preemptively. Routh fled, but was later apprehended.

A few months earlier, on July 13, 2024, at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on Trump: one person was killed, two others were wounded, and the president's ear was damaged by a bullet.

And in September 2025, a man was detained in Washington for pointing a laser pointer at Trump's helicopter. In all these cases, violations by the Secret Service or insufficient security measures were highlighted.
