The biggest progress toward ending Russia’s war against Ukraine so far is that the Russian economy is in terrible shape, stated US President Donald Trump during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Well, the biggest progress is that the Russian economy is terrible right now. As you know, it's crashing. And that frankly, Ukraine is doing a very good job of stopping this very large army," the US President said.

US stance on sanctions against Russia

US President Donald Trump has been threatening Russia with sanctions and tariffs for the past several months.

The American leader even set a deadline for the Russian President to reach a truce with Ukraine. But once the deadline expired, Trump did not impose tough sanctions or tariffs.

Recently, the US President said Washington could deliver a strong blow to Russia through sanctions, targeting Russian oil and banks.

Earlier, the White House declared its readiness to introduce serious sanctions against Moscow if the EU fully halted imports of Russian energy in the near future.

European diplomats suspect Trump deliberately issued such an ultimatum to EU countries, knowing it would be impossible to fulfill.

In this way, the US could avoid sanctions against Russia, citing EU states that continue doing business with Moscow.
