This Sunday, March 23, negotiations will take place between the US and Russia regarding the details of a ceasefire in Ukraine. It is not about a complete halt to hostilities but specifically about attacks on energy infrastructure and all other infrastructure in general, states Trump's special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

"The devil is in the details. We’ve got a team going to Saudi Arabia, led by our national security adviser [Mike Waltz] and our secretary of state [Marco Rubio], and I think, you know, we’ve got to figure out those details," Witkoff said.

He added that the agreements on the ceasefire concern a pause in strikes on infrastructure in general, not exclusively on energy. Witkoff expressed hope that the Ukrainian side would agree to the agreements that had been reached. Additionally, the special envoy clarified that the negotiations would take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

"I'm certainly hopeful that the Ukrainians will agree to it. We have some details to work out, but that will start on Sunday, and beyond that we will move to a full ceasefire. And we had some good conversation today on the ingredients to achieve that," Witkoff said.

At the same time, it is unclear whether Ukraine will be at the upcoming negotiations. Moreover, there have been no statements from the Russian side about the meeting on March 23.

Commenting on the phone call between Trump and Putin, Witkoff stated that this is the union of two great leaders for the good of humanity.

"I would commend President Putin for all he did today on that call to move his country close to a final peace deal. I would give all the credit to President Trump, his election at peace strength, the perception that there are no alternatives. That a good piece, a lasting peace a durable is important for both sides," said the US Special Envoy for the Middle East, who is also involved in the Russia-Ukraine war.

What preceded this

On Tuesday, March 18, a phone conversation took place between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. One of the key topics discussed was the issue of ending the war in Ukraine.

As a result of the talks, it became known that Putin had agreed to a 30-day ceasefire. However, this is not a full cessation of hostilities, as proposed by the US and accepted by Ukraine, but rather a halt to attacks on energy infrastructure and other infrastructure.
