US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the need to weaken ties between China and Russia. However, this should be done without sowing division between the neighboring nuclear-armed countries, reports Bloomberg.

"I don’t know if we’ll ever be successful completely at peeling them (Russians - ed.) off of a relationship with the Chinese. I also don’t think having China and Russia at each other’s neck is good for global stability because they’re both nuclear powers," Rubio said.

According to him, close ties between China and Russia could pose a problem for the US if Moscow becomes a "permanent junior partner" to Beijing, as this would result in an alliance of two nuclear powers against Washington.

"We could find ourselves in a situation where, whether Russia wants to improve its relations with the US or not, they can’t because they’ve become completely dependent on the Chinese because we have cut them off. What’s a better outcome for us is to have a relationship," Rubio noted.

Relations between China and US

Relations between the US and China are characterized by a complex dynamic. While the two countries cooperate from time to time, they remain in competition for global leadership.

Recently, China offered assistance to countries in implementing programs that lost funding after former President Donald Trump's administration decided to terminate USAID operations.
