Trump's main ally in US Senate opposes peace talks with Russia
Mike Rounds, the main ally of President-elect Donald Trump in the Senate, opposed negotiations on a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. He said that the Kremlin could not be trusted, reports Politico.
Senator Mike Rounds spoke about Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a speech at the International Security Forum in Halifax.
“As much as I would like to believe we can negotiate with a tyrant, I suspect we may be deceiving ourselves,” he said.
He emphasized that Putin would not stop even if he were offered a certain part of the territories.
“Do you believe that this tyrant, if you offer him a part of a free country, do you think he’s gonna stop? I wish I could say there’s an easy way out, there’s not,” Rounds asked.
At the same time, he expressed his disappointment with the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
“I just feel so frustrated that we have not been able to provide them all of the equipment that they need, and all of the weapons systems that they need, in order to respond to the absolute tyranny coming from Russia... I wonder why we haven’t done more more quickly than we have,” Rounds said.
