Trump's envoy, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, reportedly tried to pressure Ukraine and its European partners with threats of a "deterioration of the peace deal." He also demanded that Ukraine make territorial concessions, reports the Financial Times.
Ukrainian First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya told the Financial Times that Driscoll "was very active, engaging, willing to listen," but noted that the conversation in Kyiv was far from smooth.
A senior European official described Driscoll's tone in meetings with ambassadors and Western officials as "nauseating." He refused to answer whether the US considered holding Russia accountable for war crimes an important part of the peace plan. His conduct left officials deeply disappointed.
During the visit, Driscoll frequently cited US Vice President JD Vance and claimed that territories Ukraine did not want to cede would allegedly be "in Russian hands." He also threatened a "deterioration of the deal."
"There are cities, locations under dispute that will be in Russian hands; it is just a matter of time. If we do not recognise that, then the decision to fight must weigh: how many lives are you willing to sacrifice? The deal does not get better from here; it gets worse," he stated.
US media previously reported that Driscoll had begun openly misleading European officials about a supposed "missile threat" from Russia to push for a rapid end to the war in Ukraine.
During the Kyiv meeting, he warned Ukrainian officials of an allegedly impending defeat, citing the challenging battlefield situation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Russia's readiness to fight indefinitely. He added that concluding a deal immediately would be the best course, warning that delays would only make matters worse.
