Trump's advisor speaks out on support for Ukraine: Blank check is no strategy
President-elect Donald Trump's team believes that a “blank check” strategy cannot be used to support Ukraine, according to Mike Waltz, future National Security Advisor to President Trump.
During the interview for the CBS News channel, the host asked Waltz whether the Trump team plans to limit Ukraine's use of American weapons or target assistance once the new administration is in office.
“President Trump just said in the interview that a blank check, in his interview with Time magazine, I believe, a blank check is not a strategy. This is just, kind of, forever war that we seem to be backing into. What does success look like in line with our interests? How do we end the war? Who's at the table? How do we drive, you know, all sides to the table, and what's the framework for an agreement? Those are things that we're thinking through with his fantastic team that he's assembling,” Waltz replied.
The phrase “blank check” refers to the format of support for Ukraine from the current administration of US President Joe Biden. The Biden administration's support for Ukraine has been limited to the amount of funding approved by the US Congress.
Recently, in an interview with Meet the Press, Donald Trump said that he would try to end Russia's war against Ukraine “if he can.” At the same time, he added that Ukraine could expect not to receive as much military assistance from the United States as it does now when he returns to power.
