US President Donald Trump said he’s not sure he could stop Israel’s strikes on Iran even if he wanted to, to meet Tehran’s demands for resuming nuclear deal talks, according to his remarks in response to reporters’ questions.

"I think it's very hard to make that request right now. If somebody is winning, it's a little bit harder to do than if somebody is losing. But we're ready, willing and able, and we've been speaking to Iran, and we'll see what happens," Trump said.

He added that, in his view, Iran was weeks or months away from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Trump also commented on the involvement of European countries in the diplomatic process with Iran. The US leader is convinced that Tehran has no intention of engaging in dialogue with Europe.

“Iran doesn’t want to speak with Europe. Europe is not going to be able to help with this one,” he emphasized.

US talks with Iran

Since last week, Israel has carried out a series of missile strikes on Iran’s nuclear and military sites as part of an ongoing operation. These attacks come amid Tehran’s refusal to sign a nuclear agreement with the US.

On June 19, it was revealed that Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held several phone conversations about a diplomatic resolution to the conflict between Iran and Israel.

President Trump gave Tehran a two-week deadline to resume negotiations. The White House stated that during this period, the president would decide whether Washington would join Israel’s operation.

Meanwhile, Iran has already declared that it has no intention of returning to diplomacy as long as Israel continues bombing its military and nuclear facilities.
