The US President has extended the ban on Russian ships docking at US ports for another year. This decision automatically extends the state of emergency in the maritime sector, which was originally declared by Joe Biden, according to the US Federal Register.

Although the document has so far been made available for public review, it will be officially published today.

The restrictions will remain in effect until at least spring 2027. The US President has decided not to ease pressure on Russian maritime logistics. Trump’s signature on the document means that Russia remains isolated from US shipping routes.

"I am continuing for 1 additional year the national emergency with respect to the Russian Federation and the emergency authority relating to the regulation of the anchorage and movement of Russian-affiliated vessels to United States ports," the text of the official executive order states.

The sanctions apply not only to the state fleet. All vessels with any connection to Russia are affected. The document cites the main reason that Russia continues to pose a threat to US national security.

Restrictions history: from 2022 to today

The state of emergency was first declared by the Biden administration in April 2022. At the time, it was a response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, US authorities have reviewed the appropriateness of these measures annually.

Meanwhile, France is preparing strict measures, planning to double fines and prison terms for crews using false flags. Violators face up to two years in prison and a fine of 300,000 euros.

Sweden has already detained a bulk carrier heading from Russia after it was caught dumping waste in the Baltic Sea. An investigation into a possible violation of environmental laws is currently underway.
