US President Donald Trump has decided not to impose a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Canada but will maintain the previously planned 25% tariffs. This decision follows Ontario's retreat from imposing tariffs on electricity exports to the United States, according to CNN.

The White House confirmed that the 25% tariff on steel and aluminum would take effect at midnight on Tuesday, March 11, in the United States.

"After President Trump threatened to use his executive powers to retaliate with a colossal 50 percent tariff against Canada, Ontario Premier Doug Ford spoke with Secretary Lutnick to convey that he is backing down on implementing a 25 percent charge on electricity exports to the United States," said White House spokesman Kush Desai.

He added that Trump again "used the leverage of the American economy, which is the best and biggest in the world, to deliver a win for the American people."

In line with his previous directives, Desai stated that the 25% tariff on steel and aluminum would be applied to Canada and all other trade partners starting at midnight on March 12.

Additionally, it was recently announced that Australia would not be exempted from the US tariffs on steel and aluminum. The White House confirmed that Trump had considered the exemption but ultimately decided against it.
