Trump preparing 'massive deal' with Russia's closest ally

The US is working on a major deal to purchase potash fertilizers from Belarus. Washington expects Belarusian products to be significantly cheaper than those the US currently buys from Canada, according to US President Donald Trump on the Truth Social platform.
"The United States is working on a massive deal with respect to the purchase of potash from Belarus. The pricing would be substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada," Trump wrote.
According to him, such an agreement would be "very good news" for American farmers and ranchers.
However, the US president did not specify the volume of supplies involved or when they could begin. In other words, the deal is currently being prepared and is not yet a finalized contract.
Why the US has turned its attention to Belarus
A potential deal with Minsk could change the supply of potash fertilizers to the US market, where Canada remains one of the key sources.
Trump's statement came amid worsening trade relations between Washington and Ottawa. The US imposed new tariffs on a number of Canadian goods, after which Canada announced corresponding restrictions on American products.
Against this backdrop, Washington is looking for ways to diversify supplies of certain goods, including fertilizers.
Belarus is one of the world's major producers of potash fertilizers. At the same time, trade in Belarusian products with Western countries has long been restricted by sanctions.
In May 2026, the US asked Ukraine, Poland, and Lithuania to consider easing sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilizers. Washington, in particular, proposed restoring transit through these countries, bypassing Russia.
