The United States wants Ukraine to act quickly in the context of negotiations to end the war with Russia, US President Donald Trump said while speaking to journalists.
Trump was asked about his expectations ahead of a meeting between Ukrainian and US government officials in Florida, scheduled to take place over the weekend.
"Well, they're getting close to something, but I hope Ukraine moves quickly. I hope Ukraine moves quickly because Russia is there. And you know, every time they take too much time, then Russia changes their mind," the US President said.
Ukraine is being pushed toward a deal
On December 9, the Financial Times, citing sources, reported that US President Donald Trump wants to secure a deal to end Russia's war against Ukraine by Christmas.
According to the outlet’s source, US President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff also warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a phone call that he had only a few days to respond to US peace initiatives.
Later, sources told RBC-Ukraine that the US is indeed rushing its peace plan, but has not set any deadlines for Ukraine.
This information was also confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said there were no ultimatum-style dates during the talks.
At the same time, reports recently emerged that the US has offered Ukraine security guarantees comparable to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
Politico, citing sources, reported that Ukraine must accept the offer within a few days, otherwise it would expire.
