US President Donald Trump has voiced a tough stance on new tariffs. He said that the United States sets the requirements, and other countries have two options - to cooperate or not, according to the president on board Air Force One.

“We are talking to a lot of countries. Ultimately, we pretty much can do what we want to do. But we want to be fair. We can set the tariff. They choose not to deal with us, or they can choose to pay it. That's where we are. We can set the tariff, or we can do it in a number of different ways. They can pay it or negotiate, or they can not pay,” Trump said.

At the same time, the US President emphasized that he did not think that anyone would consider the customs tariffs he had set too high.

“We can't do business with them if they think it's too high,” Donald Trump said.

Trump's new customs tariffs

In early April, US President Donald Trump introduced large-scale import duties. This is a historic step that has shaken the world and markets. A number of countries threatened the United States with countermeasures in response to the duties.

Trump stated that he could consider eliminating or reducing duties for countries if they make a “phenomenal” offer.

On April 9, Trump suspended additional tariffs for a number of countries. We are talking about more than 75 countries that have approached the United States with a proposal to negotiate. These countries will be subject to a 10% duty. The US President also stated that he was ready to make exceptions for most countries, but emphasized that the 10% duty rate was the minimum.

As a reminder, the US also imposed a 10% duty rate on Ukraine. The government explained that this was not critical for Ukraine.
