US President Donald Trump has formally notified Congress of the resumption of military operations in Iran, according to The New York Times.

Notably, in a letter sent to congressional leaders on Friday, July 10, the US president stated that American forces had carried out "defensive strikes against targets within Iran" on July 7.

The outlet provided no further details about the contents of the letter.

Earlier today, Donald Trump announced the resumption of the Iranian blockade, so named because it applies only to vessels and customers linked to Tehran.

Overnight, the United States launched another wave of strikes against Iran, hitting dozens of targets. During the operation, US forces reportedly used naval drones for the first time.

On the night of July 12, Iran announced the full closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran said the move was prompted by several vessels allegedly attempting to transit the route without authorization from Iranian authorities.

During the incident, Iranian forces attacked a container ship, forcing it to halt. The United States subsequently carried out strikes on a number of Iranian targets.

According to Axios, the White House is preparing for the possibility of a prolonged confrontation with Iran.

The outlet reported that the US administration is considering a scenario in which the exchange of strikes linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis could continue for anywhere from several days to several weeks.
