Does the US president's statement mean politicians will automatically run for office?

US President Donald Trump called Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio a "dream team" for the 2028 presidential election. At the same time, he stopped short of giving official endorsement, The Hill reports.

Speaking at an event marking National Police Week, Trump spoke positively about Vance and Rubio. He called the tandem "dream team," while describing the choice of JD Vance as "perfect."

"Who likes JD Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio? All right. Sounds like a good ticket," the US president said.

Trump's test

At the same time, he stressed that his statement does not mean automatic nomination of both politicians in 2028. According to political strategists, the US president continues studying the reaction of the public and donors to potential candidates.

It is noted that such an approach — constantly testing people's attitude toward those around him — is the characteristic style of Trump's political activity.

Marco Rubio already participated in the presidential race in 2016 but lost the Republican primaries to Donald Trump. He later served in the Senate before joining Trump's second administration. In December, he said he would be "one of the first to support" Vance if he decided to run for president.

JD Vance also served as a senator before becoming vice president. So far, neither politician has officially announced the start of the campaign for the 2028 election.

After a prolonged conflict with Iran that brought neither military nor diplomatic results, Donald Trump faces the risk of a major decline in approval ratings.

In particular, two weeks ago, Reuters reported that Trump's approval rating fell to a record low during his current term and stood at 34%.

The White House has begun preparing for the possibility that the Republican Party could lose the autumn midterm elections to the US Congress.
