According to Trump, he recommended that South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appoint Darline Graham as interim senator.
"I recommended to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina," the President wrote.
Under South Carolina law, the governor has the authority to appoint a temporary senator who will serve until a special election is held.
The appointment carries major political significance, as the interim senator is expected to become the Republican nominee in the upcoming election.
Trump's proposal regarding Darline Graham may be intended to avoid showing favoritism toward any of the other potential contenders.
As previously reported, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham died on the evening of July 11 after a brief, sudden illness.
His final trip abroad was to Ukraine, where he met with Ukrainian officials and called for tougher sanctions on Russia, continued support for Ukraine's military, and increased pressure on the Kremlin.
Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Graham has remained one of Ukraine's most outspoken supporters in the US Congress.
