Trump invents excuse for his threats not to help Europe in case of war
Former American President Donald Trump has come up with an excuse for his threats not to help Europe in the event of war, reports Politico.
During a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in 2020, Trump promised not to help Europe in the event of war.
Later, Trump said that NATO countries spend "billions and billions" of dollars on their collective defense after he threatened not to defend Europe if it was attacked.
Speaking at a rally in New Hampshire this week, Trump accused European countries of relying too heavily on Washington when it comes to defense spending.
When he touched on this topic, a European leader asked him: "Does that mean if we’re not paid up, you’re not going to protect us?" to which Trump said that was exactly what he was saying.
"I said that’s exactly what it means. And the following day, billions and billions of dollars came pouring in," Trump added.
