US President Donald Trump expects negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to be successful and productive, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard stated in an interview with NDTV.

She recalled that Trump had already clearly outlined his position — he wants to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

"The negotiations (with Ukraine and Russia – ed.) have just begun and he's looking forward to success, not for himself but for the cause of peace and to stop the taking of innocent lives," Gabbard added.

According to the director of national intelligence, the US has the best negotiators working with both Ukrainians and Russians. Therefore, Washington expects further progress.

"President Trump will have a very productive conversation with Putin at the appropriate time, rooted in his unwavering commitment to peace," she added.

Putin-Trump talks

US President Donald Trump announced today, March 17, that he plans to hold a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The call is expected to take place tomorrow, March 18.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the talks between Trump and Putin could happen tomorrow.

The key topic of discussion between the US and Russia recently has been Washington's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine. So far, Moscow has been reluctant to agree.
