Trump focuses on reshoring tech production to US despite tariff exemptions - White House

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that smartphones and computers were exempted from Trump’s tariffs. However, the White House remains focused on bringing technological manufacturing back to the US, according to CNN.
Leavitt said that US President Donald Trump continues to urge companies to relocate their production to the United States. She explained that Washington cannot rely on Beijing to produce critical technologies. As a result, several companies are hurrying to move their manufacturing to America.
“President Trump has made it clear America cannot rely on China to manufacture critical technologies such as semiconductors, chips, smartphones, and laptops. That’s why the President has secured trillions of dollars in US investments from the largest tech companies in the world, including Apple, TSMC, and Nvidia. At the direction of the President, these companies are hustling to onshore their manufacturing in the United States as soon as possible,” Leavitt said.
Background
The US Customs and Border Protection service published a statement noting that smartphones, laptops, and various electronic components are among the exempted goods. This, in turn, could be a major development for American tech giants like Apple, which places about 90% of its iPhone production and assembly in China.
According to White House officials, Trump stated that automobiles, steel, pharmaceuticals, chips, and other specific materials would be included in special tariffs to ensure fair and effective tariff enforcement.
He also mentioned that the US President would soon order a study on the impact of semiconductor imports on national security.
