US President Donald Trump chose Hungary as the venue for talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, out of respect for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and due to the country’s stability.

"He (Viktor Orbán - ed.) is a leader that we like. He likes me, I like him. It's a safe country. He's doing a very good job. He's been a very good leader in the sense of running his country. He doesn't have a lot of problems that the other countries have. So, we've decided that we will be with Viktor Orbán. I think he will be a very good host," said the US president.

Trump–Putin meeting

On Thursday, October 16, Donald Trump held a phone call with Russian president Vladimir Putin. The call took place ahead of Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington.

Trump described the conversation as productive and announced a new meeting with Putin in Budapest. The exact date of the summit has not yet been set.

The Kremlin also confirmed the possibility of holding the US–Russia summit in Budapest.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called the upcoming Trump–Putin meeting "great news for the peace-loving people of the world," saying that Hungary is ready to host the summit.
