US President Donald Trump has been constantly reminded about his campaign promises to end Russia's war against Ukraine within 24 hours. But that was merely an "exaggeration," according to Trump's interview with The Time.

"Well, I said that figuratively, and I said that as an exaggeration," the US President said in response to a question about plans to end the war in Ukraine on the very first day.

At the same time, Trump stated that he meant to emphasize something by it, but the journalists were unable to understand his unclear speech.

"Obviously, people know that when I said that, it was said in jest, but it was also said that it will be ended," noted the US President.

In response to the question of why the war still hasn't ended, Trump said: "Well, I don't think it's long. I mean, look, I got here three months ago. This war has been going on for three years. It's a war that would have never happened if I was President. It's Biden's war. It's not my war. I have nothing to do with it."

The US President also stated that this war would have never started if he was in the White House, and Vladimir Putin would have never done it.

"Would have never happened (Russia's war against Ukraine - ed.) Ever. You then say, what’s taking so long? Do you hear this, Steve? The war has been raging for three years. I just got here, and you say, what's taken so long?" Trump said.

Earlier, Donald Trump voiced his intention to end Russia's war against Ukraine within 24 hours back during his election campaign.

According to the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology poll, in March 2025, a minority of Ukrainians expect that under US President Donald Trump, Ukraine can count on a just peace.
