US President Donald Trump has accused NATO allies of being unwilling to defend the US in times of crisis. He said he was not certain such assistance would be provided, reports The Guardian.

"If the United States was in trouble, and we called them, we said we got a problem, France, we got a problem, couple of others, I won’t mention –you think they’re going to come and protect us? They’re supposed to, I’m not so sure," Trump said.

Earlier, he stated that the US would not fight for NATO allies if those countries failed to allocate sufficient funds for their defense.

"I think it’s common sense. They don’t pay, I’m not going to defend them," the US president told reporters.

At the same time, he stated that he had no plans to withdraw from NATO, emphasizing that he sees the alliance as a potentially valuable organization.

"I view Nato as potentially good, but again … it’s very unfair what’s been happening," he concluded.

Yesterday, NBC News, citing sources, reported that Trump was discussing the possibility of prioritizing NATO member states that allocate the required percentage of their GDP to defense.
