US President-elect Donald Trump did not back down from threats during a conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. He wants to impose high tariffs if Denmark does not give up Greenland, DR reports.

She informed parliament about the content of her 45-minute discussion with the incoming US president, which took place yesterday.

According to Frederiksen, Trump reiterated the possibility of imposing tariffs if Denmark does not give up Greenland.

"The US side suggested that, unfortunately, there might be a situation where we collaborate less with Americans in the economic sphere," Frederiksen stated.

She emphasized that Denmark does not seek a trade conflict with the US but will continue consultations with businesses and European partners to find the best solution.

Frederiksen also confirmed that the Danish government intends to maintain dialogue with Trump’s administration on the Greenland issue once he assumes office.

She declined to comment on whether the conversation with Trump eased tensions between the two countries but acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

"We are doing everything possible to handle this as wisely and effectively as we can," Frederiksen added.

Trump wants to buy Greenland

US President-elect Donald Trump aims to make Greenland a part of the United States. He does not rule out using force to persuade Denmark.

For centuries, Greenland has been under Danish control, initially as a colony and now as a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The island is governed by the Danish constitution, meaning any change in its legal status would require constitutional amendments.

It was previously reported that Denmark privately sent proposals regarding Greenland to Trump’s team. Copenhagen has no intention of selling the island but is open to discussing other requests from Washington.

Trump’s future National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, stated that Trump is considering various options for controlling Greenland.

Additionally, this week, Trump’s allies introduced a bill proposing the purchase of Greenland, allowing him to begin negotiations as soon as he officially takes office on January 20.

Meanwhile, on January 15, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to Trump’s ambitions during a conversation with the US president-elect, stating that the island’s autonomy should decide on its independence
