Perspectives of Greenland's seizure - Trump's advisor
US President-elect Donald Trump is considering various options for Greenland and the Panama Canal. Control over them is essential for US security, Mike Waltz, Trump's future National Security Advisor, said in an interview with ABC News.
Asked whether Trump is serious about using military power, Waltz said that “he takes very seriously the threats ” that the United States faces in the Arctic and the Western Hemisphere.
“It's bad enough having our adversaries coming into our Western Hemisphere and threatening our national security, and President Trump is ready to take big and bold steps to ensure that the United States is well defended,” he said.
The journalist then asked Waltz whether the US president-elect would use military force to seize Greenland and the Panama Canal. In response, the Trump adviser said that the new head of state would not rule out any option.
“President Trump is not gonna take any option off the table, unlike, frankly, his predecessor, so when it comes to our national defense, that is of paramount importance to the commander-in-chief,” Waltz summarized.
Trump's idea to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal
In December, Trump renewed his first-term idea to buy Greenland. For their part, the island's authorities refuse to sell it, and it is under the control of Denmark, a NATO country.
Yesterday it became known that Denmark sent personal messages to Trump's team about Greenland. The country is ready to discuss strengthening security on the island or increasing the US military presence.
Also in December, Donald Trump accused Panama of charging excessive fees for the use of the Panama Canal. According to him, if the country does not acceptably manage the canal, he will demand that it be transferred to US control.
The other day, Panama responded to Trump's claims by stating that the sovereignty of the Panama Canal is not under discussion.
