Trump demands Mexico impose tariffs on Chinese goods

The administration of US President Donald Trump informed Mexican officials that they must impose their tariffs on Chinese imports. This would allow Mexico to avoid the tariffs that Trump has threatened, according to Bloomberg.
This message was delivered during a meeting with the Mexican delegation in Washington, attended by US and Mexican trade ministers Howard Lutnick and Marcelo Ebrard, among others.
Bloomberg notes that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has intensified efforts to tackle cheap Chinese imports to support domestic industry and ease tensions with the Trump administration.
However, Mexico did not make any specific commitments regarding China during the meeting, which concluded with an agreement to establish a working group to continue discussing trade and tariff issues.
Ebrard stated that the Washington meeting marked the beginning of a constructive dialogue and that collaborative efforts would begin on Monday.
Trump had previously claimed that fentanyl was entering the US through Mexico and Canada.
In response, the US leader decided to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada. However, on February 4, he signed an order suspending these measures after discussing the matter with senior representatives from both countries, who agreed to take certain actions.
